General questions
What is Fonetti?
Fonetti is an AI-powered Personal Reading Coach that listens to children read aloud and provides real-time feedback, helping them build fluency, confidence, and independence. Powered by multi-patented speech recognition, the platform is designed specifically for reading – not adapted from general voice technology.
Can Fonetti be used at home as well as in schools?
Yes! Fonetti is designed for both school and home use, allowing children to practice reading consistently wherever they are. All school users will also automatically be able to use the platform at home, at no extra cost.
Will Fonetti replace teachers and parents from reading with children?
No, absolutely not. We have designed Fonetti to support and empower, not replace, teachers and parents. Through its unique speech recognition technology, the reading platform gives children more opportunities to practice reading independently, without fear of embarrassment, while adults can focus on guidance and deeper learning.
Who is Fonetti designed for?
Fonetti is designed for primary-aged children and secondary students who need additional reading support. It’s suitable for a wide range of learners, including confident readers, reluctant readers, and those needing extra practice.
What age group is Fonetti best suited for?
Fonetti is primarily used for children aged 5–12, but it can also support older SEND, EAL or dyslexic students in secondary school who may need extra help to improve their reading fluency and confidence.
What devices does Fonetti work on?
Fonetti works on most modern devices with a microphone, including tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. The platform can be accessed on the web by visiting www.app.fonetti.com, and compatible with all browsers except for Mozilla Firefox.
How Fonetti works
How does Fonetti listen to children reading?
Fonetti uses advanced speech recognition technology, developed by the leading tech company Auris Tech, to listen to children as they read aloud, analysing their reading in real time and providing valuable insights for teachers to review which words a pupil read well, and which ones they struggled with.
How is Fonetti different from other reading apps?
Unlike traditional reading apps that generally prompt children to read and then evaluate their knowledge through tests and quizzes, Fonetti actually listens and responds to a child’s reading in real time, just like a personal reading coach rather than a passive tool.
Can Fonetti track reading progress?
Yes. Fonetti tracks key reading metrics on fluency, accuracy and engagement, helping teachers and parents monitor progress over time, and in excruciating detail.
Can Fonetti be used alongside existing reading programmes?
Yes. We’ve consciously designed Fonetti to complement existing reading schemes and classroom teaching, not replace them.
What kind of feedback does Fonetti give?
Fonetti provides gentle, real-time support by correcting misread words, helping with pronunciation, and encouraging children to keep going without interrupting their flow.
Does Fonetti interrupt children while they read?
No. Fonetti is designed to support without disrupting the reading experience, offering subtle guidance through colour coded words that keeps children engaged and confident throughout their reading. The ball is very much in the child’s court, with options given to repeat words or come back to at a later date.
How quickly do children see improvement?
Many schools that use Fonetti report measurable improvements in reading confidence and fluency within 3 months of consistent use for their classrooms. Because our platform can listen to multiple children at once, accurately, schools can make huge time savings compared to traditional teaching assistant support.
Does Fonetti work for group or individual reading?
Fonetti is ideal for independent reading practice, but it can be used alongside classroom activities and interventions to maximise reading time for all students.
Our purpose
Why was Fonetti created?
Our Founder, Kim Antonious created Fonetti out of personal experience. As someone with ADHD and dyslexia, she wanted to do something to help all children today become confident, independent readers by giving them something that would act as their personal champion, coaching and supporting them – one book at a time.
How does Fonetti help improve reading confidence?
By offering immediate, supportive feedback in a low-pressure environment, Fonetti helps children practice without fear of mistakes, building confidence over time. Our tech is here to empower both the children that use it, and the schools, teachers and parents who monitor it.
What impact does Fonetti have in schools?
Fonetti helps schools increase reading practice at scale, giving entire classrooms more reading time simultaneously while freeing up teachers for targeted support. Our aim is to help teachers get their classrooms’ reading miles in, because practice is the key to confidence.
What results have schools seen with Fonetti?
Schools using Fonetti have reported improved reading fluency, increased confidence, and higher engagement, with many seeing results within the first term, with 92% of educators reporting Fonetti as having significantly improved pupil engagement and reading enthusiasm.
What problem is Fonetti solving?
Too many children in the UK, and indeed around the world, don’t get enough one-to-one reading time. With schools and teachers under pressure for both time and budget, Fonetti helps bridge the gap by providing every child with a personal reading coach they can use anytime.
How does Fonetti support children with different needs?
Fonetti supports a wide range of learners, including children with dyslexia, SEND, and those learning English as an additional language (EAL), by adapting to their pace and providing consistent reinforcement.
How does Fonetti support teachers?
Fonetti reduces the pressure on teachers by handling routine reading practice, allowing them to focus on intervention, comprehension and individual support for their pupils through the platform’s in-depth data collection and reporting.
How does Fonetti help build long-term reading habits?
By making reading interactive, supportive, and rewarding, Fonetti encourages children to read more often and turn practice into a lasting habit. We believe that when you teach a child to read, you give them the power to learn for life.
